Hair Transplants, My "Recovery" Story

Chapter 1) Before my hair transplants, life under cover

For me, hair loss and going bald was like dying of a heart attack - something that should only happen to people when they're older. So when my hair loss started at age 25, I felt cheated of my youth.

At first I tried hair loss treatments like prescription Minoxidil (before the days of over the counter Rogaine). But after a few months I noticed no improvements. So I quit using rogaine. After that my hair loss accelerated, as if my baldness had three or four months of hair loss to catch up on.

So finally, I decided to cheat fate by wearing a hairpiece (choose your euphemism . . . hair weave, hair system, etc.). This worked as long as everyone made an effort not to notice.

Can you spot the system?
Clue - look below.

But I often felt a bit fraudulent wearing a hair system. And then there was the wind, nephews and nieces, and girl friends - all of which I had to be careful around. No more just diving into life (no matter what the advertising claimed).

Now I had to primp my hair system carefully and often, listen to weather reports, and explain to women that a hairpiece was no big deal. It's just a modern accessory like contact lenses or dentures and other things you might put in or on your head.

Sometimes Wearing a
Just didn't feel

Chapter 2) My first look into the OLD Hair Transplant Surgery

Grafty "Corn Row" Hair Transplant

Then in the early 90's I decided to look into doing a hair transplant. I discovered that, yes, hair transplant doctors could transplant hair to the top of your head, were it would grow for life - but who wanted it? The results looked like hair on a doll - clusters of hair planted in rows, just like thick stalks of corn in a mechanically planted field. NO THANK YOU - I'll keep fighting the wind and making excuses for my hairpiece.

Chapter 3) My second look into the NEW Hair Transplant Surgery

A few years later, I saw an impressive infomercial on television for the Bosley Hair Restoration Clinic and requested their hair transplant video. I was impressed. Apparently Bosley and his group finally figured out what was obvious to everyone, stop transplanting hair like corn!

By using a combination of micro grafts (1 to 3 hairs per graft) and mini grafts (3-7 hairs per graft) they were able to give patients a fairly natural look. I began thinking that, just maybe, I could crawl out from underneath my hair system and have real natural hair again with a hair transplant.

Then came the sticker shock. To get even a thin coverage from a hair transplant would cost tens of thousands of dollars. I began to wonder how much of this money was paying for advertising instead of the hair transplant.

I decided to do some shopping. I researched several  hair transplant surgeons. And what I found was that most of hair transplant doctors were using mini and micro grafts (1 to 8 hair grafts) to do a hair transplant, but their results were still less than natural. They were also typically only able to transplant 300 to 500 grafts per session. And they were all very expensive.

Chapter 4) Finding the Most Natural Hair Transplant

Eventually I contacted the Shapiro Medical Group, headed by Dr. Ron Shapiro. I first spoke on the telephone with a guy named Matt Zupan.

What I liked right away was he was more interested in educating me about hair transplant surgery than making a sales pitch. We spoke for over an hour on the telephone about everything I ever wanted to know about a hair transplant. At last, it seemed like someone was combining the best of all worlds - moving a large volume of hair per session (1200 to 2000 grafts in one session), in natural 1 to 4 hair natural groupings (all microscopically placed in patterns that replicate how hair grows naturally) and doing it all cost effectively!

The advanced hair transplant procedure they perform is called "total follicular unit hair transplantation".

I had the feeling that Dr. Ron Shapiro and his group were putting their resources were they belonged - into a hair transplant. They concentrated on developing new techniques, teaching other hair transplant doctors in international seminars, and performing only the most natural hair transplant surgery. I made an appointment to meet with Matt for a free consultation.

Chapter 5) My Consultation

If seeing is believing, Matt and Dr. Ron Shapiro gave me more than enough reasons to believe. They had a seemingly endless supply of client before and after hair transplant photos. Real photos of real people with all kinds of hair loss (and hair gain), not models with moussed hair in a color brochure.

Hairlines restored by Dr Shapiro

This was the refined natural look I wanted - no matter how the wind blows or nephews and nieces or my girl friend grab.

Dr. Shapiro and his associates Dr. Sharon Keene, Dr. Paul Rose, and Dr. Glenn Charles have perfected a micro mega grafting hair transplant procedure that combines the best of all worlds - naturalness, fullness, and cost effectiveness. Their technique is so advanced that they are regularly show cased as guest lecturers, teaching other hair transplant surgeons their procedure at all the major international hair transplant conferences.

What this meant to me as a client is I could get refined micro grafts throughout (not just in the front) and lots of them in one hair transplant session (1200 to 2000 grafts versus the typical 500 to 1000 grafts done at most clinics) from one of the very clinics in the world. In short, more natural refined hair for the buck.

Chapter 6) Working out a Plan of Action

Dr. Shapiro took a close look at me and evaluated my hair loss and how much and where I would lose hair in the future. We then worked out a plan to restore my hair given the amount of good donor hair I had. (Click here to learn how a hair transplant works) Fortunately I had a good thick supply of donor hair on the back and sides of my head. This would allow Dr. Shapiro to move enough hair follicles from my donor area to give me a fairly full look through out.

On his advice, I decided to also begin using minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (now sold as Propecia) to complement my planned hair transplant. The drugs would hold the line on my thinning, while the hair transplant would restore the areas that already went bald. Call it a defensive offensive plan to cure baldness.

I was very impressed with Dr. Shapiro, not just his medical and aesthetic skill, but his personality. He listened well and was very modest and easy going. Some of the other hair transplant physicians I met had a very clinical bedside manner. I really liked Dr. Shapiro's sincerity and warmth.

Over time I found my first impression to be very accurate. For a lot of very good reasons, I decided to have my hair transplant work done by The Shapiro Medical Group.

Chapter 7) My First Hair Transplant Procedure

My transformation began with my first hair transplant session in September of 1996. In this one day hair transplant session Dr. Shapiro and his five assistants transplanted over 1,400 grafts (now days they often do over 2000 graft sessions) primarily to the top front and middle of my head.

By concentrating primarily on the frontal area, I could get the most dramatic initial improvement in my appearance (After all, most people look at your face not the back of your head). Later we would fill in the back and add more fullness to the front in another hair transplant procedure.

After my hair transplant surgery, I drove home, watched some television and went to bed - no sweat and very little blood.

Chapter 8) Life Out in the Open - the happy ending!

That was my first of three hair transplant procedures over the course of a year and a half. Each experience was almost identical, from the hair transplant procedure to how my hair grew back. And I'm delighted with the results!

It took some time and sacrifice to get my hair back, but it was well worth it. I've beaten baldness once and for all! Now I dive right into life with no fear of the wind, water, sun, nephews and nieces, or my girl friend!
